It was a great event which ended with our Annual Summer Vocology Institute concert.

Voice Reserach Papers

March 16, 2011 in Papers in Voice

A new forum was created called Voice Research Papers.

The purpose of the forum is:

  • to provide an avenue for summaries of papers concerning voice research and reporting,
  • an outlet to discuss errors, poor protocol, or misstatements which may have been missed by the reviewers and editors, and
  • a discussion of papers and future research.

Svec et al., 2003, “Measurement of vocal doses…” Correction

March 15, 2011 in Papers in Voice, Research

In the paper published by NCVS affiliates:

J. G. Svec, P. S. Popolo, and I. R. Titze. Measurement of vocal doses in speech: experimental procedure and signal processing. Log.Phon.Vocol. 28 (4):181-192, 2003. PMID: 14686546

There is an error in some of the equations.  The following was put together by Anil Reddy Palaparthi, NCVS Research Engineer:

The error in the dose paper is that while converting the dose equations from continuous time to discrete time, an extra ?t(n) is added to the discrete version to discretize dt which is not needed.

For example, in the cycle dose calculation (equation 18 in the referenced paper) you can see the additional ?t(n),

Eqn 18, from Svec et al, 2003

While converting an integral from continuous time to discretize time, it converts to summation. i.e.

Therefore, there won’t be the extra ?t(n) in the discrete version of the equation. So, the converted equation should be

Corrected Equation 18

This is the case in all the other dose equations in the paper.
